Dr. Werner Bastian
was born in 1955 in Neunkirchen/Saar. He studied Biology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt/Main and the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. After completing his Ph.D. in Biotechnology at the University of Kaiserslautern, Dr. Bastian joined the patent department of CIBA-GEIGY AG in Basel, Switzerland, where he received his training in the field of intellectual property protection. In 1993 Dr. Bastian became a European Patent Attorney and was thereafter appointed Group Leader IP Biotechnology. After two long-term assignments to the Novartis Biotechnology Research Station in Research Triangle Park, NC, USA and the Syngenta Genomics Research Institute (TMRI) in San Diego, CA; USA Dr. Bastian was promoted to Head of Global IP Seeds in 2003. Dr. Bastian was a member of the IP expert groups of EuropaBio, the European Seeds Association and Micropat and the "European Seeds Association“ and is still active in the expert groups of economiesuisse and the Swiss Society for the Chemical Industry (SGCI). Today, a main aspects of Dr Bastian´s work focusses on helping start-up companies, particularly in the pharmaceutical area, to develop and manage their IP portfolios.
Dr. Bastian is lecturing on IP protection of plants at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zürich.
Dr. Werner Bastian has been the Managing Director of the Basel Office of VOSSIUS & PARNTER since February 1, 2006.
